This month:
SCIENTISM & PSEUDOSCIENCE
Does your work demand that you cook up some flimsy metrics to back up what you want to say? Is your professional judgment overridden by the data that comes from a centralised bureaucracy? These are common experiences these days.
There’s a lot that we could never know without scientific methods, but there are also kinds of understanding that science can’t integrate, and we should make more space for those.
In our professional and public lives, non-scientific knowledge tends to get dismissed, often in favour of metrics put together using weak methodologies that take away the autonomy of people who actually do the work.
In this session we’ll discuss why other kinds of knowledge are philosophically rigorous, we’ll share experiences of the encroachment of bad science into areas it doesn’t belong, and we’ll look for strategies to resist it.
